The renovation and expansion of the Frick Collection, led by Selldorf Architects, unifies the museum’s previous renovations and expands its educational, conservational, and administrative resources. The project will include approximately 136,000sf of renovated and repurposed space and 65,000sf of new construction.
In collaboration with Simpson Gumpertz & Heger, GNA has assessed the structure of the existing buildings and developed strategies for their renovation and expansion. The solutions address the tight site conditions, extensive below grade excavation, and desired seamless museum experience. The complex and historic framing strategy of the Frick Reference Art Library required specific analysis to develop a strategy for introducing new framing adjacent to and within it. Additionally, many historic interior finishes cannot be disturbed, necessitating innovative structural solutions to integrate new and existing spaces.
