The Swissair North American Headquarters is located in Melville NY. A variety of corporate facilities, warehouses and small farms are situated to the east and west. The building's site orientation was derived with respect to its highway context and to take advantage of natural light and views. A two-story brise-soleil on the eastern facade provides a civic and open face towards the local thoroughfare; to the west, a solid service core zone faces a visually encroaching neighbor. A clear glass curtain wall looks out over the lawn to the northern landscaped parking area. The south facade is a two-story high metal paneled wall with small punched openings that provide visual and acoustic privacy from the highway.
The building consists of two floors and a lower level partly excavated to the south and east. The ground floor is occupied by a reservation center, training rooms and conference facilities. A double height reception area and sky-lit atrium run the entire length of the building providing access to the vertical circulation elements and a small conference room. The second floor contains open office space, a flexible conference room and private enclosed offices, and in the basement are computer and communications facilities, mechanical systems and a south facing cafe with access to the sunken garden. The structure is an economical system of prefabricated concrete beam and slab forms set on a regular grid of cast-in-place concrete columns and walls and finished with cast-in-place concrete topping slabs. The foundation is spread footings on soil.
