The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) sponsored an international design competition for a major crossing of the Rambler Channel. Sixteen design teams were invited to participate based upon qualifications and technical innovation in bridge design to submit proposals for the 1000m main span crossing. Of the 27 entries, five were selected for Phase II of the design competition.
The HNTB and GNA collaborative design pictured to the right was selected for Phase II. Several strategies including the use of “X” shaped piers and a “Y” profile for the cable section were adopted to develop lateral stiffness in the cable system. The application of a cable-stay system over the 1000m main span would have been the world’s longest span for a cable-stay bridge.
